Multiage Program

Multiage Class Programs

Mabel Paine offers a multiage class in our upper grade. Simply defined, a multiage classroom is a mixed-age group of children that stays with the same teachers for two or more years. The multiage classroom is not a combination class where a teacher instructs separate levels in their designated curricula. Ages and grades do not divide multiage communities of learners within the classroom. Rather, in the multiage community, every child in the "family" can become a successful learner on his own continuum of growth. The multiage classroom supports this individual growth through a process approach to learning that is child-centered rather than curriculum centered. The mixed-age environment requires teachers to facilitate the learning of each child to his or her highest potential. As a result, a well run multiage classroom can turn the process of education into a wonderful and successful adventure in learning where students achieve at high levels.

Upper Grade R/Z Multiage Program

The R/Z multiage program at Mabel Paine consists of fourth and fifth grade students and is entering its 12th year. The class is taught by Mr. Tom Roth, and Mr. Steve Zietlow. Our mission is to provide an environment where students make active choices and decisions about their learning and carry it as far as possible, while co-teachers ensure that the curriculum and state standards are being taught. Children with different perspectives, ages, and experiences learn from each other while individual strengths are appreciated and encouraged.

We believe that all students should have the opportunity to explore all areas of the educational realm, to be challenged and stimulated academically, and to develop and enhance social skills for positive and meaningful results. Throughout each day, students are actively engaged in experiences individually, in small groups, and in larger groups, creating a spirit of community and support for themselves and one another. Academically, skills are woven into a meaningful context with much emphasis on intrinsic rewards of learning and striving for excellence. Our lessons, assignments, and projects are differentiated to meet the various academic needs of our classroom population. We value the project-based approach that facilitates greater learning independence and develops critical thinking skills, logic, creativity, self-direction, and motivation to push oneself to their utmost potential. Our desire is through the Mabel Paine multiage experience the students exit our program feeling a sense of achievement as a whole, in their academic skills, leadership, and social skills.
